CNN covers Congo war

International news agency CNN has an article on their front page featuring Eve Ensler, a female refugee from Congo: “Obscene. Horrible. Out of control….” The activist tosses out a cluster of angry words, trying to describe what is, in some ways, indescribable. She talks about a woman being gang-raped by 15 soldiers. Some violated with sticks and knives. Cannibalism. She has returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where thousands of women and girls have been systematically raped during a 10-year war that some say has cost more lives than any other war since World War II. Does Sony need a religious affairs adviser? Comment (1) Posted by: Tom Heneghan Tags: Uncategorized Does Sony need a full-time religious affairs adviser? Someone who says "that's OK" or "whoa, don't go there!" It looks like they could use one, judging by its decision to recall and remaster its Playstation 3 video game LittleBigPlanet because it might offend Muslims. LittleBigPlanet was supposed to be one of the biggest releases of the season. And then Sony found out some background music had a few phrases from the Koran in it and they decided to replace the disks with different music

WebWallpaper Swaps Your Wallpaper on a Schedule from Webcams

Windows only: Free, open-source application WebWallpaper loads images from any URL or desktop location and swaps out your desktop background on a schedule. Originally designed for use with webcams, the application works with any image URL you point it to. WebWallpaper comes with a few webcam URLs baked in with beautiful streaming images, so it's easy to get up and running with live-updating backgrounds. If you know of a high-resolution webcam in your area that streams to a static URL, this app is potentially very cool—your desktop becomes a window looking outside, updating your wallpaper with the current conditions automatically. If WebWallpaper isn't quite what you're looking for, check out previously mentioned John's Background Switcher—which integrates with popular photo webapps like Flickr, Picasa, and even Facebook—or the recently released Wallpapers from MSN.

ChromeMailer Makes Gmail Chrome's Default Mail Handler

Windows only: ChromeMailer, a free email utility for users of Google's Chrome browser, pops open a Gmail compose window by default when you click an email address in Chrome. Actually, ChromeMailer seems to replace the default mailto: handler at the system level, so it's advised only for fans of Gmail's web interface. While ChromeMailer is potentially very useful, there are two big caveats: It requires an up-to-date .NET installation in Windows XP, and Windows Vista makes you answer a User Account Control nag on every click. If you're more a Firefox fan looking for a similar fix, try our previous suggestions for integrating Gmail into your browser. ChromeMailer is a free download for Windows systems only

Geode Brings Location Awareness to Firefox

Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Firefox extension Geode adds experimental geolocation features to your browser. We've already seen how a location-aware iPhone can change your life, and the idea is very much the same with Geode.

You’ve arrived in a new city, a new continent, a new coffee shop. You don’t really know where you are, and are looking for a good place to eat. You pull out your laptop, fire up Firefox, and go to your favorite review site. It automatically deduces your location, and serves up some delicious suggestions a couple blocks away and plots directions there.
That's still a dream, since most web sites don't yet support that sort of location awareness, so Mozilla Labs offers up a couple of demo apps you can use to try it out. So the big question is: How will Geode find me, and how well does it work?

RTM Notifier Puts Remember the Milk Alerts on Your Desktop

Windows/Mac/Linux: Free application RTM Notifier periodically checks in with popular to-do list web site Remember the Milk and displays notifications for time-sensitive tasks. The goal of the application is two-fold: On one level, it's just a notification tool, displaying pop-up alerts for due tasks. Beyond that, it's a desktop entry point for your RTM tasks. Both features could be improved upon (especially since RTM has an open API), but if you manage all your to-dos with RTM, it might be worth checking out. RTM Notifier is a free download, requires Adobe AIR.

Work From Home Data Entry Jobs - What Are They?

If you have been looking for a work from home opportunity, you may have seen alot of ads for "online data entry jobs". You are probably wondering "what are data entry jobs?" and "what should I know before I get started?". I am here to tell you exactly what they are and what they involve. Basically, the job title implies everything you will be doing. You will be typing in forms, transcribing, writing referrals and more. Some companies have you typing and posting ads to receive sales commission also. A job that only has you typing ads to receive sales commission is really a marketing job, not a true "data entry" job.

A true "data entry" job will have you doing combinations of typing tasks, and possibly some ad typing. You should be aware that there are many scams online under the title "data entry" jobs. Just type in "data entry jobs" into your search engine and you will see thousands of results. Before you leap, you must look! Always review the full contents of the website carefully. Insure that the site looks professional. Look for certifications from NCL or SCAMX. Professional companies will clearly display their certifications. Read all of the page contents. Sometimes the page will have a lengthy disclaimer at the end with contents you should definitely read before you join anything. If the whole page is just claims of "make $100's now" and testimonials from people, but no actual information about the company, exit the page! Its just a scam! Scam pages are strategically designed to make people sign up on impulse. You read the testimonials without receiving any information about the company or what your actual job description is.

Be aware that there are many companies out there charging several hundred dollars for your "sign up". That is outrageous. You should never have to pay anything over $50 to receive startup tutorials and software guide. If you are paying more than that, you are lining the pockets of some random guy who has made an ingenious scam page. I would suggest you research, look for NCL and SCAMX certifications like I mentioned earlier and thoroughly look into the company before you start. Good companies will have information contacts or extensive company information on their main page. Remember the guidelines I've laid out and you will have success finding a company that is right for you. Best of luck to you!

How to Get Started in a Home Based Business

There are more legitimate home based business opportunities out there than what people want to believe. It is just a matter of finding the right one. It is like trying to find the right size shoe that also looks right. If the shoe doesn't fit or it looks awkward, then it is going to be uncomfortable in so many different ways.

When doing a search for that perfect home based business opportunity, you may find that you're bombarded by these opportunities that say they are the one. Some of them may also say, "Pay us $39.95 and we can provide you with the materials to get you started." Here is something you need to know: Anything that makes you pay to get started probably isn't a good idea. It is good to look inside yourself and see what it is you're interested in and how you can make money off of that.

Let's say you really enjoy making bracelets and you want to make a home based business out of that. You can do that by building a website and bringing traffic to that website. In the meantime, you can join an affiliate program where you can sell the products and services of another company so that your website can be profitable while you're building traffic.

How successful your business is depends on how well you market it. If you join forums, email groups, build a blog, invest in pay per click ads, provide certain keywords on your page for search engine indexing, and you simply build networks, then you're going to be a success.

Is Every Home Based Business a Flop?

Tell someone that you work at home and they're going to look at you and ask, "Are those work-at-home opportunities worth anything? Are they legitimate?" What is hard for them to understand is that you're probably not filling out surveys or doing some data entry job that required you to pay a fee to get started. When you tell them what you're really doing, that is when they can see that not every home based business is a flop. However, they have to be wise in choosing the right business.

One way individuals can make a home based business a success is to look at affiliate marketing opportunities. Affiliate marketing is making a lot of people a lot of money because they know how to do it right. They are creating a website, building traffic to that website, and they're having a lot of fun. They're marketing products and services that they believe in because what they are marketing is unique.

Then again, some people start a home based business based on something that they enjoy. For example, the writer may become a freelance writer or the person who loves to make crafts starts selling them on eBay. Whatever the business, there is always marketing involved, which means traffic must be brought to the website so that revenue can grow. This is done through creativity and through tools that are made available such as Google AdWords or Google AdSense. There is also article marketing and optimizing web pages with keywords so that search engines will index them higher in the results. There is just so much to be done that virtually any home based business can become a success.

Need to Find Leads For Your Home Based Business?

Just because someone has a home based business doesn't mean that it was easy getting to that point. Starting a home based business is actually difficult, which debunks any idea that it is a piece of cake.

When starting out, you have to know what it is you're selling on the inside, on the outside, every corner, and in every nook and cranny. If you don't, then it is difficult to have all of the answers, which means your potential customer will go check out the other guys. Second of all, you have to find leads. Without leads, you're standing on your tiptoes. Here are ways to get your leads:

Start with those you know and see if they want to be a part of what you're doing. It depends on what you're doing as to how they can become involved. If anything, they can become customers.
When networking with others, start a referral program. They get something in return if they refer people to you. This can quickly build your leads.
When operating a home based business it is possible to buy leads online, but why do that when you can get them for free? There is also a fact that the cheap leads are probably not legitimate. Good leads cost a pretty penny.
You can build a blog and provide a form where people can sign up to be on your email list or subscribe to your newsletter.
There are many ways in which you can build leads for free, so it is a good idea to take advantage of those ways and have a lot of fun with it. No matter what your home based business, you'll notice things picking up in no time.

Developing The Winning Entrepreneur Mindset

Fast, faster, fastest... instant gratification is the name of the game. They want overnight success ("before breakfast" preferably!). But that is simply not part of building a business from scratch. A real business takes time and effort.

Yes, even online ones. So many Net Entrepreneurs somehow think that the Internet suspends fundamental laws of the business world. While building a business online does involve less risk (you don't have to mortgage your house!), it still takes real "sweat equity" to build a business that generates long-term, ever growing profits.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend, a successful Montreal real estate developer, the other day. She wanted to start a site that would make her company the "Montreal real estate development" epicenter, connecting international investors with local developers.

Great idea. Tight niche. Winnable. High Return On Investment monetization models.
